It is, therefore, not surprising that this aspect of life should become a central focus of artificial life. We have known since Darwin that the diversity is produced dynamically, through the process of evolution; this has led life's creative productivity to be called Open-Ended Evolution (OEE) in the field. This article introduces the first of two special issues on current research on OEE and on the more general concept of open-endedness. Most of the papers presented in these special issues are elaborations of work presented at the Third Workshop on Open-Ended Evolution, held in Tokyo as part of the 2018 Conference on Artificial Life. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_e_00282","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,4,1]],"date-time":"2019-04-01T17:12:40Z","timestamp":1554138760000},"page":"1-3","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":23,"title":["Open-Ended Evolution and Open-Endedness: Editorial Introduction to the Open-Ended Evolution I Special Issue"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"25","author":[{"given":"Norman","family":"Packard","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Protolife, Inc."}]},{"given":"Mark A.","family":"Bedau","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Reed College"}]},{"given":"Alastair","family":"Channon","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Keele University"}]},{"given":"Takashi","family":"Ikegami","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Tokyo"}]},{"given":"Steen","family":"Rasmussen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Southern Denmark"},{"name":"Santa Fe Institute"}]},{"given":"Kenneth","family":"Stanley","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Uber AI LabsUniversity of Central Florida"}]},{"given":"Tim","family":"Taylor","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"bib1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00279"},{"key":"bib2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/106454600300103683"},{"key":"bib3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00280"},{"key":"bib4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00278"},{"key":"bib5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1521291113"},{"key":"bib6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00281"},{"key":"bib7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00276"},{"key":"bib8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00277"},{"key":"bib10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/ARTL_a_00210"}],"container-title":["Artificial Life"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1162\/artl_e_00282","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,12]],"date-time":"2021-03-12T21:48:10Z","timestamp":1615585690000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/artl\/article\/25\/1\/1-3\/2910"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2019,4]]},"references-count":9,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2019,4]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1162\/artl_e_00282"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/artl_e_00282","relation":{},"ISSN":["1064-5462","1530-9185"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1064-5462","type":"print"},{"value":"1530-9185","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2019,4]]}}}
