However, despite strong evidence that the hippocampus plays a critical role in sequential processing, the involvement of the MTL in timing per se is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated whether patients with MTL damage exhibit differential performance on a temporal distance memory task. Critically, we manipulated context shifts, or boundaries, which have been shown to interfere with associative binding, leading to increases in subjective temporal distance. We predicted that patients with MTL damage would show impaired binding across boundaries and thus fail to show temporal expansion. Consistent with this hypothesis, unilateral patients failed to show a temporal expansion effect, and bilateral patients actually exhibited the reverse effect, suggesting a critical role for the MTL in binding temporal information across boundaries. Furthermore, patients were impaired overall on both the temporal distance memory task and recognition memory, but not on an independent, short-timescale temporal perception task. Interestingly, temporal distance performance could be independently predicted by performance on recognition memory and the short temporal perception task. Together, these data suggest that distinct mnemonic and temporal processes may influence long interval temporal memory and that damage to the MTL may impair the ability to integrate episodic and temporal information in memory.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/jocn_a_02222","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,7,18]],"date-time":"2024-07-18T13:49:57Z","timestamp":1721310597000},"page":"2302-2316","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/mitpressjournals.corrections.policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Medial Temporal Lobe Damage Impairs Temporal Integration in Episodic Memory"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"36","author":[{"given":"Sarah","family":"DuBrow","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Oregon"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5071-7101","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Brynn E.","family":"Sherman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pennsylvania"}]},{"given":"Michael R.","family":"Meager","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"New York University Grossman School of Medicine"}]},{"given":"Lila","family":"Davachi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Columbia University"},{"name":"Nathan Kline Institute, Orangeburg, NY"}]}],"member":"281","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,11,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"2024101620194004800_bib1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"743","DOI":"10.1146\/annurev-psych-010213-115117","article-title":"Properties of the internal clock: First- and second-order principles of subjective time","volume":"65","author":"Allman","year":"2014","journal-title":"Annual Review of Psychology"},{"key":"2024101620194004800_bib2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"2056","DOI":"10.1162\/jocn_a_01592","article-title":"Sequence memory in the hippocampal-entorhinal region","volume":"32","author":"Bellmund","year":"2020","journal-title":"Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience"},{"key":"2024101620194004800_bib3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"153","DOI":"10.3758\/BF03197508","article-title":"Memory and the experience of duration in retrospect","volume":"2","author":"Block","year":"1974","journal-title":"Memory & Cognition"},{"key":"2024101620194004800_bib4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"656","DOI":"10.1037\/0278-7393.4.6.656","article-title":"Remembered duration: Evidence for a contextual-change hypothesis","volume":"4","author":"Block","year":"1978","journal-title":"Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory"},{"key":"2024101620194004800_bib5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"755","DOI":"10.1038\/nrn1764","article-title":"What makes us tick?
