The goal is to provide insight into how biological networks, and possibly large artificial networks such as foundation models, transition from analog computation to an analog approximation of symbolic computation. From the mathematical perspective, I focus on the development of consistent symbolic representations and optimal policies for action selection within network settings. From the biological perspective, I give examples of human and animal social network behavior that may be described using these mathematical models.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/neco_a_01536","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,9,16]],"date-time":"2022-09-16T19:41:47Z","timestamp":1663357307000},"page":"525-535","update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1162\/mitpressjournals.corrections.policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Toward Network Intelligence"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"35","author":[{"given":"Alex","family":"Pentland","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 02139, U.S.A. pentland@mit.edu"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"281","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,17]]},"reference":[{"issue":"7","key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"801","DOI":"10.3390\/e23070801","article-title":"Accuracy-risk trade-off due to social learning in crowd-sourced financial predictions","volume":"23","author":"Adjodah","year":"2021","journal-title":"Entropy"},{"issue":"21","key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"11379","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1917687117","article-title":"Adaptive social networks promote the wisdom of crowds","volume":"117","author":"Almaatouq","year":"2020","journal-title":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1371\/journal.pone.0095693","article-title":"The exploration-exploitation dilemma: A multidisciplinary framework","author":"Berger-Tal","year":"2014","journal-title":"PLOS One"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","first-page":"357","article-title":"Private and byzantine-proof cooperative decision-making","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 20th Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems","author":"Dubey","year":"2020"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","first-page":"2740","article-title":"Kernel methods for cooperative multi-agent contextual bandits","volume-title":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Machine Learning","author":"Dubey","year":"2020"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","first-page":"14340","article-title":"Adaptive methods for real-world domain generalization","volume-title":"Proceedings of the IEEE\/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition","author":"Dubey","year":"2021"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","first-page":"1","article-title":"An experimental study of social influence and information design","volume-title":"Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction","author":"Epstein","year":"2021"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","volume-title":"The ecological approach to visual perception","author":"Gibson","year":"1979"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"104469","DOI":"10.1016\/j.cognition.2020.104469","article-title":"Bayesian collective learning emerges from heuristic social learning","volume":"212","author":"Krafft","year":"2021","journal-title":"Cognition"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"1645","DOI":"10.1038\/srep01645","article-title":"The predictability of consumer visitation patterns","volume":"3","author":"Krumme","year":"2013","journal-title":"Scientific Reports"},{"issue":"44","key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"27090","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.2003632117","article-title":"Prediction and prevention of disproportionally dominant agents in complex networks","volume":"117","author":"Lera","year":"2020","journal-title":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"3922","DOI":"10.1109\/TSP.2021.3090677","article-title":"Quantization games on social networks and language evolution","volume":"69","author":"Mani","year":"2021","journal-title":"IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing"},{"key":"2023021720442248600_","article-title":"From understanding computation to understanding neural circuitry.
