Compared to traditional language models that generate from scratch either left-to-right or by first sampling a latent sentence vector, our prototype-then-edit model improves perplexity on language modeling and generates higher quality outputs according to human evaluation. Furthermore, the model gives rise to a latent edit vector that captures interpretable semantics such as sentence similarity and sentence-level analogies. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/tacl_a_00030","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,12,10]],"date-time":"2018-12-10T19:32:50Z","timestamp":1544470370000},"page":"437-450","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":73,"title":["Generating Sentences by Editing Prototypes"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Kelvin","family":"Guu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Statistics, Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Tatsunori B.","family":"Hashimoto","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Stanford University"},{"name":"Department of Statistics, Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yonatan","family":"Oren","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Percy","family":"Liang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Stanford University"},{"name":"Department of Statistics, Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"issue":"0","key":"p_3","first-page":"1137","volume":"3","author":"Bengio Y.","year":"2003","journal-title":"Journal of machine learning research"},{"key":"p_9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/tacl_a_00098"},{"key":"p_13","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"853","DOI":"10.1613\/jair.3994","volume":"47","author":"Hodosh M.","year":"2013","journal-title":"Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR)"},{"key":"p_14","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"183","DOI":"10.1023\/A:1007665907178","volume":"37","author":"Jordan M.
