In this paper, we present a sequence tagging framework and apply it to word segmentation for a wide range of languages with different writing systems and typological characteristics. Additionally, we investigate the correlations between various typological factors and word segmentation accuracy. The experimental results indicate that segmentation accuracy is positively related to word boundary markers and negatively to the number of unique non-segmental terms. Based on the analysis, we design a small set of language-specific settings and extensively evaluate the segmentation system on the Universal Dependencies datasets. Our model obtains state-of-the-art accuracies on all the UD languages. It performs substantially better on languages that are non-trivial to segment, such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Hebrew, when compared to previous work. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/tacl_a_00033","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,12,10]],"date-time":"2018-12-10T19:32:50Z","timestamp":1544470370000},"page":"421-435","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Universal Word Segmentation: Implementation and Interpretation"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Yan","family":"Shao","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Christian","family":"Hardmeier","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Joakim","family":"Nivre","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"issue":"4","key":"p_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"433","DOI":"10.1002\/wics.101","volume":"2","author":"Abdi Herv\u00e9","year":"2010","journal-title":"Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Computational Statistics"},{"key":"p_10","first-page":"2121","volume":"12","author":"Duchi John","year":"2011","journal-title":"Journal of Machine Learning Research"},{"key":"p_12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/COLI_a_00137"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_17","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"75","DOI":"10.1007\/s10579-007-9050-8","volume":"42","author":"Itai Alon","year":"2008","journal-title":"Language Resources and Evaluation"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_28","first-page":"1929","volume":"15","author":"Srivastava Nitish","year":"2014","journal-title":"Journal of Machine Learning Research"}],"container-title":["Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00033","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,12]],"date-time":"2021-03-12T21:38:00Z","timestamp":1615585080000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/tacl\/article\/43449"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2018,12]]},"references-count":5,"alternative-id":["10.1162\/tacl_a_00033"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00033","relation":{},"ISSN":["2307-387X"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2307-387X","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2018,12]]}}}
