Such evaluations can be analyzed separately using signed social networks and textual sentiment analysis, but this misses the rich interactions between language and social context. To capture such interactions, we develop a model that predicts individual A\u2019s opinion of individual B by synthesizing information from the signed social network in which A and B are embedded with sentiment analysis of the evaluative texts relating A to B. We prove that this problem is NP-hard but can be relaxed to an efficiently solvable hinge-loss Markov random field, and we show that this implementation outperforms text-only and network-only versions in two very different datasets involving community-level decision-making: the Wikipedia Requests for Adminship corpus and the Convote U.S. Congressional speech corpus. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/tacl_a_00184","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,12,28]],"date-time":"2018-12-28T15:43:26Z","timestamp":1546011806000},"page":"297-310","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":116,"title":["Exploiting Social Network Structure for Person-to-Person Sentiment                     Analysis"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Robert","family":"West","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Hristo S.","family":"Paskov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jure","family":"Leskovec","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Christopher","family":"Potts","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stanford University,"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"issue":"10","key":"p_4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"3241","DOI":"10.1088\/0305-4470\/15\/10\/028","volume":"15","author":"Barahona Francisco","year":"1982","journal-title":"Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_6","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1","DOI":"10.1561\/2200000016","volume":"3","author":"Boyd Stephen","year":"2011","journal-title":"Foundations and Trends in Machine Learning"},{"issue":"5","key":"p_8","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"277","DOI":"10.1037\/h0046049","volume":"63","author":"Cartwright Dorwin","year":"1956","journal-title":"Psychological Review"},{"issue":"2","key":"p_9","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"100","DOI":"10.1037\/1089-2680.8.2.100","volume":"8","author":"Dunbar Robin I.","year":"2004","journal-title":"Review of General Psychology"},{"issue":"4","key":"p_10","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"967","DOI":"10.1037\/0022-3514.74.4.967","volume":"74","author":"Barrett Lisa Feldman","year":"1998","journal-title":"Journal of Personality and Social Psychology"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_11","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"107","DOI":"10.1080\/00223980.1946.9917275","volume":"21","author":"Heider Fritz","year":"1946","journal-title":"The Journal of Psychology"},{"issue":"2","key":"p_21","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"177","DOI":"10.1108\/10662240810862239","volume":"18","author":"Malouf Robert","year":"2008","journal-title":"Internet Research"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_23","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1","DOI":"10.1561\/1500000011","volume":"2","author":"Pang Bo","year":"2008","journal-title":"Foundations and Trends in Information Retrieval"},{"issue":"3","key":"p_24","first-page":"61","volume":"10","author":"Platt John","year":"1999","journal-title":"Advances in Large Margin Classifiers"},{"issue":"8","key":"p_26","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"802","DOI":"10.1080\/09658210903130764","volume":"17","author":"Rubin David C.","year":"2009","journal-title":"Memory"},{"issue":"6","key":"p_27","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1161","DOI":"10.1037\/h0077714","volume":"39","author":"Russell James A.","year":"1980","journal-title":"Journal of Personality and Social Psychology"},{"issue":"1","key":"p_35","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"33","DOI":"10.1080\/19331680802149608","volume":"5","author":"Yu Bei","year":"2008","journal-title":"Journal of Information Technology and Politics"}],"container-title":["Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00184","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,12]],"date-time":"2021-03-12T21:38:56Z","timestamp":1615585136000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/tacl\/article\/43320"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014,12]]},"references-count":12,"alternative-id":["10.1162\/tacl_a_00184"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00184","relation":{},"ISSN":["2307-387X"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2307-387X","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014,12]]}}}
