However, in some cases helpers may be unrelated\n\t\t\t\t\t\tindividuals, which require other types of explanation. Here, we used genetic\n\t\t\t\t\t\tanalyses and observations of feeding behaviour to investigate the\n\t\t\t\t\t\trelationships between helping at the nest and relatedness in a species where\n\t\t\t\t\t\thelpers vary in their relatedness to the breeders, the sociable weaver,\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<jats:italic>Philetairus socius<\/jats:italic>. We also investigated the effect of\n\t\t\t\t\t\tage and breeding group size on feeding behaviour. We found no overall\n\t\t\t\t\t\tincrease of feeding rate with relatedness. Instead, the relationship between\n\t\t\t\t\t\thelpers' feeding rate and relatedness changed with age. Yearling helpers,\n\t\t\t\t\t\twhich were typically the offspring of one or both parents, did not feed\n\t\t\t\t\t\tsignificantly more often when more related to the nestlings or the breeding\n\t\t\t\t\t\tmale or female but did bring larger prey when more related to the nestlings\n\t\t\t\t\t\tor breeding female. For adult helpers, contrary to the expectations of the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tkin selection hypothesis, the feeding rate and the size of the prey brought\n\t\t\t\t\t\twas negatively linked to their relatedness to the nestlings and the breeding\n\t\t\t\t\t\tfemale. These results suggest that the reasons for helping in this\n\t\t\t\t\t\tpopulation change with age.
