{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,22]],"date-time":"2025-10-22T22:20:00Z","timestamp":1761171600117,"version":"build-2065373602"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Walter de Gruyter GmbH","issue":"2","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Amphib Reptilia"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2005]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec>\n                    <jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title>\n                    <jats:p>The viperine snake Natrix maura is a common water snake, which forages on\n\t\t\t\t\t\taquatic prey such as fish and frogs in Western Mediterranean water bodies.\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFemale viperine snakes collected from three populations at the Iberian\n\t\t\t\t\t\tPeninsula during the vitellogenesis period were compared. Mean clutch size\n\t\t\t\t\t\tand range, as well as the slope of the regression between body size and\n\t\t\t\t\t\tclutch size, did not show differences between populations. In contrast, mean\n\t\t\t\t\t\tsize of enlarged follicles of females collected in May from the Ebro Delta\n\t\t\t\t\t\tproved significantly smaller than those of females from the Matarranya River\n\t\t\t\t\t\t(50 km far) and the Granada Depression (500 km far). There were no\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdifferences in climatic conditions between areas. However, seasonal\n\t\t\t\t\t\tvariation in food availability was significantly different in the Ebro\n\t\t\t\t\t\tDelta. In this area, the rice fields are dry in early spring as men control\n\t\t\t\t\t\tthe water flow, and prey are not available. This energetic constraint\n\t\t\t\t\t\tinduced female viperine snakes to adjust reproductive timing according to\n\t\t\t\t\t\tseasonal availability and to delay vitellogenesis for at least one month. By\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcontrast, other Mediterranean populations exhibited a rather high prey\n\t\t\t\t\t\tavailability from early spring (e.g. Matarranya River), females being in\n\t\t\t\t\t\tgood condition in this season and consequently vitellogenesis starting\n\t\t\t\t\t\tearlier than in the Ebro Delta.
