We examined the conservation status of the snakes from the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIberian Peninsula by applying two complementary methods. The first method,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcreated by Filippi and Luiselli for a study of the Italian snakes\n\t\t\t\t\t\tconservation status, takes into account the ecological and non-ecological\n\t\t\t\t\t\tattributes which make species vulnerable to extinction. The second is a\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcartographic analysis which consists of calculating two indexes derived from\n\t\t\t\t\t\tthe comparison of old and recent citations in UTM 10 \u00d7 10 km squares of\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIberian snakes by means of extensive database sets. For each species, we\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcalculated the percentage of recent citations, and the percentage of squares\n\t\t\t\t\t\twith both old and recent citations. Species with low proportion of recent\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcitations and new squares appeared to be in decline. We found considerable\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcoincidence between the two methods in the identification of the most\n\t\t\t\t\t\tthreatened snake species: Vipera latastei, Coronella girondica, and Natrix\n\t\t\t\t\t\tnatrix. We suspect that the ecological specialisation and the low\n\t\t\t\t\t\treproductive output make C. girondica and V. latastei prone to extinction\n\t\t\t\t\t\twhen faced with environmental changes (i.e. habitat loss). For N. natrix, we\n\t\t\t\t\t\targue that this semi-aquatic snake experiences suboptimal environmental\n\t\t\t\t\t\tconditions in Mediterranean habitats.
