{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,29]],"date-time":"2025-10-29T05:41:16Z","timestamp":1761716476026,"version":"build-2065373602"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Walter de Gruyter GmbH","issue":"2","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Amphib Reptilia"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec>\n                    <jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title>\n                    <jats:p>The phylogeography of the colubrid snake Hierophis viridiflavus was estimated\n\t\t\t\t\t\tusing ND4 mtDNA sequences and a fragment of the nuclear marker \u03b2-fibrinogen\n\t\t\t\t\t\tintron 7. This species has a wide distribution across the Mediterranean\n\t\t\t\t\t\tregion, and is characterized by three distinct colour patterns\n\t\t\t\t\t\t(\u201cviridiflavus\u201d, abundistic, and melanic-melanotic) with a quite well\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdefined geographic distribution. The \u201cviridiflavus\u201d pattern occurs in the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tnorthwestern and central areas of the species' range, the abundistic pattern\n\t\t\t\t\t\tis typical of the individuals from Corsica and Sardinia, and the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tmelanic-melanotic coloration is present in northeastern and southern Italy,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tand Sicily. A total of 42 individuals from most of the species' range\n\t\t\t\t\t\t(including Pyrenees, central France, Italian Peninsula, Corsica, Sardinia\n\t\t\t\t\t\tand Sicily) were analyzed. Results support the existence of two different\n\t\t\t\t\t\tmtDNA lineages, one from Spain, France, Corsica, Sardinia, and continental\n\t\t\t\t\t\tItaly mainly west of the Apennines, and another one occurring in the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tsouthern part of Italy and northeast of the Apennines, with a 4% genetic\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdivergence between them. Since both mtDNA lineages are found in northwestern\n\t\t\t\t\t\tItaly, where the \u201cviridiflavus\u201d colour pattern is almost exclusively found,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tit is clear that colour pattern is not linked to the mtDNA clades. The same\n\t\t\t\t\t\tis evident for \u03b2-fibrinogen, which is not subdivided geographically in the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tway that the mtDNA lineages are.
