Using scanning electron microscopy, we examined the skin surface of four European Lacertidae species which occur in different habitats, as well as climatic conditions. We sampled\n                    <jats:italic>Podarcis carbonelli<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>P. virescens<\/jats:italic>\n                    from an oceanic-influenced climate,\n                    <jats:italic>Zootoca vivipara<\/jats:italic>\n                    from a temperate climate, and\n                    <jats:italic>Gallotia galloti<\/jats:italic>\n                    from three climatically distinct sites. In all species, dorsal midbody scales were proximally laminated. However,\n                    <jats:italic>G. galloti<\/jats:italic>\n                    differed from the other species, displaying spiny margins on lamellae, whereas\n                    <jats:italic>Podarcis<\/jats:italic>\n                    species and\n                    <jats:italic>Z. vivipara<\/jats:italic>\n                    had smooth margins. Within\n                    <jats:italic>G. galloti<\/jats:italic>\n                    , spiny microstructures were denser and larger in the northern, humid population compared to the high-elevation and southern, drier populations.
