Dauer juveniles\n\t\t\t\t\t\twere isolated from the body of the large pine weevil, Hylobius sp.,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcollected from maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) stumps, in Portugal.\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBursaphelenchus antoniae sp. n. was reared and maintained in P. pinaster\n\t\t\t\t\t\twood segments and on Petri dish cultures of the fungi Botrytis cinerea and\n\t\t\t\t\t\tMonilinia fructicola. The new species is characterised by a relatively small\n\t\t\t\t\t\tbody length of ca 583 \u03bc m (females) and 578 \u03bc m (males), a lateral field\n\t\t\t\t\t\twith two incisures, presence of a small vulval flap and a conoid female tail\n\t\t\t\t\t\twith a rounded or pointed terminus. Males have stout spicules with a\n\t\t\t\t\t\tdisc-like cucullus and seven caudal papillae arranged as a single midventral\n\t\t\t\t\t\tprecloacal papilla, one precloacal pair and two postcloacal pairs. In the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcharacter of the lateral field, B. antoniae sp. n. comes close to B.\n\t\t\t\t\t\tabietinus, B. rainulfi and B. hylobianum, whilst spicule characters place it\n\t\t\t\t\t\twithin the piniperdae-group sensu Ryss et al. Morphologically, B. antoniae\n\t\t\t\t\t\tsp. n. is closest to B. hylobianum; the spicules of these two species having\n\t\t\t\t\t\tflattened, wing-like, alae on the distal third of the lamina.\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBursaphelenchus antoniae sp. n. is distinguished from B. hylobianum on the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tarrangement of the caudal papillae (two vs three pairs). ITS-RFLP profiles\n\t\t\t\t\t\tand the failure to hybridise support the separation of the two species.\n\t\t\t\t\t\tPhylogenetic analysis of the new species, based on the 18S rDNA sequence,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tsupports the inclusion of this new species in the B. hylobianum-group sensu\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBraasch.
