As it relied on the morphology and logistics of seaports, this overseas venture necessitated technical interventions in harbours, prompted morphological changes, and generated challenges that, in turn, had substantial short- and long-term environmental impacts. These impacts stemmed from a range of factors, including logistical constraints, demographic pressure along the coastline, royal and\/or municipal policies, and human interaction with ecosystems. Harbour construction, coastal management, systems for the supply of raw materials, and connections between the coastline and the hinterland are among the topics to be addressed. At the same time, the arrival of the Portuguese on new continents set in motion a wider process characterised by new strategies for the use of waterfronts and costal and riverine areas. This involved harbour construction, as well as technical and environmental adaptations to meet the needs and requirements introduced by the newcomers. Naval industries, particularly shipbuilding, required access to raw material, dealing to extensive deforestation and to increased pressure on coastlines, both in Europe and in the \u2018new worlds\u2019.
