Far from being a mystic disconnected from empirical inquiry, Jung was deeply committed to scientific exploration, grounding his theories in rigorous observation, clinical experience, and interdisciplinary engagement (Stevens 1982; 2002). In fact, Jung addresses us “as a psychologist with a scientific conscience” (Jung, CW 7, par. 365). Clark’s book—Carl Jung and the Evolutionary Sciences: A New Vision for Analytical Psychology—is particularly valuable in highlighting this dimension of Jung’s legacy, demonstrating how his ideas align with and even anticipate modern developments in evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and cognitive science. By reclaiming Jung as a scientist and emphasizing the empirical foundation of his contributions, Clark challenges the mischaracterization of Analytical Psychology as speculative or unscientific. His book serves as a crucial corrective, situating Jung firmly within the framework of scientific inquiry while advocating for an understanding of the psyche that is both biologically grounded and empirically informed.
[[2025,3,6
["Review Essay on Gary Clark’s book, “Carl Jung and the Evolutionary Sciences: A New Vision for Analytical Psychology.” Routledge, 2025
Barbieri, M.
