Such simulations, however, suffer from two major problems: (1) they can be too computationally demanding to simulate large, complex systems within appropriate time constraints; and (2) they are difficult to develop and debug. Prior work has shown how symbolic computation can be used to help reduce both problems. In this paper, we: (1) review common concepts in power system simulations; (2) summarize prior use of symbolic computation in power system simulation; (3) explore the advantages and disadvantages achieved via symbolic techniques; (4) extend the techniques to solve linear systems via a priori symbolic LU decomposition; and (5) demonstrate the advantages of symbolic techniques on a transient event simulation of the IEEE 118-bus test power system, which runs in one-tenth the time of an equivalent traditional (sparse matrix) approach.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0037549708094046","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,9,3]],"date-time":"2008-09-03T05:33:28Z","timestamp":1220420008000},"page":"297-309","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Symbolic Reduction for High-Speed Power System Simulation"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"84","author":[{"given":"William M.","family":"Siever","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan Technological University Houghton, MI, USA,"}]},{"given":"Daniel R.","family":"Tauritz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Missouri University of Science and Technology Rolla, MO, USA"}]},{"given":"Ann","family":"Miller","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Missouri University of Science and Technology Rolla, MO, USA"}]},{"given":"Mariesa","family":"Crow","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Missouri University of Science and Technology Rolla, MO, USA"}]},{"given":"Bruce M.","family":"McMillin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Missouri University of Science and Technology Rolla, MO, USA"}]},{"given":"Stanley","family":"Atcitty","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Sandia National Laboratories Sandia, NM, USA"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2008,6,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"Power Tech Proceedings, 2001 IEEE Porto, volume 4","author":"Forsyth, P."},{"key":"atypb2","volume-title":"Proceedings of the Scalable Parallel Libraries Conference","author":"Anupindi, K."},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"Power Engineering Society General Meeting, 2005","author":"Ren, W."},{"key":"atypb4","volume-title":"Final report on the August 14th blackout in the United States and Canada: Causes and recommendations","author":"U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force.","year":"2004"},{"key":"atypb5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/59.486138"},{"key":"atypb6","volume-title":"SAE 2004 World Congress and Exhibition","author":"Elmqvist, H."},{"key":"atypb7","volume-title":"Power System Control and Stability","author":"Anderson, P.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb8","volume-title":"Computational Methods for Electric Power Systems","author":"Crow, M.","year":"2003"},{"issue":"1","key":"atypb9","first-page":"2","volume":"1","author":"Yuster, R.","year":"2005","journal-title":"Algorithms"},{"key":"atypb10","volume-title":"Matrix Computations","author":"Golub, G.H.","year":"1996"},{"key":"atypb11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/992200.992206"},{"key":"atypb12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1137\/S0895479895291765"},{"key":"atypb13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1024074.1024081"},{"key":"atypb14","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-1-4684-0519-4"},{"key":"atypb15","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/59.192924"},{"key":"atypb16","volume-title":"Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective","author":"Bryant, R.E.","year":"2003"},{"key":"atypb17","volume-title":"An Open Framework For Highly Concurrent Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation","author":"Underwood, R.C.","year":"2007"},{"key":"atypb18","volume-title":"Proceedings of the North American Power Symposium","author":"Lininger, A."}],"container-title":["SIMULATION"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0037549708094046","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0037549708094046","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,1]],"date-time":"2026-05-01T11:20:55Z","timestamp":1777634455000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0037549708094046"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2008,6]]},"references-count":18,"journal-issue":{"issue":"6","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2008,6]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/0037549708094046"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0037549708094046","relation":{},"ISSN":["0037-5497","1741-3133"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0037-5497","type":"print"},{"value":"1741-3133","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2008,6]]}}}
