Design of egress systems should take into consideration the social characteristics of the occupants and the unique layout of the buildings. This paper describes an agent-based egress simulation tool, SAFEgress, which is designed to incorporate human and social behaviors during evacuations. The unique feature of SAFEgress is its flexibility to model different individual, group, and crowd behavior. Simulations are conducted to examine egress performance of a museum floor plan for three scenarios: (1) expected occupancy load during peak hours; (2) group behaviors among museum visitors; and (3) measures to reduce pre-evacuation delay. By assuming different occupants\u2019 behaviors in the simulations, engineers, designers, and facility managers can study the important human and social factors on an egress situation and, thereby, improve the design of safe egress systems and procedures.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0037549715605363","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,9,16]],"date-time":"2015-09-16T19:57:33Z","timestamp":1442433453000},"page":"825-845","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":22,"title":["Simulating individual, group, and crowd behaviors in building egress"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"91","author":[{"given":"Mei Ling","family":"Chu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Paolo","family":"Parigi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Sociology Department, Stanford University, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Kincho H","family":"Law","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jean-Claude","family":"Latombe","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science Department, Stanford University, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,9,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-0037549715605363","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1540-6237.2011.00759.x"},{"key":"bibr2-0037549715605363","unstructured":"Kuligowski ED.
