In this paper, we develop a Design and Engineering Methodology for Organization (DEMO)-based simulation model that combines simulation and the enterprise engineering approach in order to achieve a more holistic view of the enterprise. The four-aspect DEMO models are developed for the operating room scheduling problem, which enabled us to understand the business process from different perspectives. To develop the simulation model, an expanded DEMO with implementation model (DEMO++) is applied. The AnyLogic environment is used for execution. The model evaluates the operational performance of the case mix and master surgery plans that were developed in previous studies. The initial results show the simulation potential in the performance improvement of the operating room system. Furthermore, it makes understanding and exploring the system easier. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0037549716687376","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,1,23]],"date-time":"2017-01-23T11:11:16Z","timestamp":1485169876000},"page":"363-378","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["A Design and Engineering Methodology for Organization-based simulation model for operating room scheduling problems"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"93","author":[{"given":"Zakaria","family":"Yahia","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Fayoum University, Egypt"}]},{"given":"Junichi","family":"Iijima","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering and Economics, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan"}]},{"given":"Nermine A","family":"Harraz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Production Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, Egypt"}]},{"given":"Amr B","family":"Eltawil","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering and Systems Management, Egypt - Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), Egypt"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,1,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10916-006-9012-5"},{"key":"bibr2-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ejor.2009.04.011"},{"key":"bibr3-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1937-5956.2011.01221.x"},{"key":"bibr4-0037549716687376","volume":"57","author":"Association HFM","year":"2003","journal-title":"Healthc Financ Manag J Healthc Financ Manag Assoc"},{"key":"bibr5-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10729-006-9005-4"},{"key":"bibr6-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ejor.2005.06.063"},{"key":"bibr7-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10729-007-9011-1"},{"key":"bibr8-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.cor.2012.01.013"},{"key":"bibr9-0037549716687376","first-page":"640","volume-title":"44th International conference on computer and industrial engineering 2014 (CIE\u201944)","author":"Yahia Z"},{"key":"bibr10-0037549716687376","first-page":"89","volume-title":"International conference on industrial engineering and engineering management (IEEM 2014)","author":"Yahia Z"},{"key":"bibr11-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0037549710387802"},{"key":"bibr12-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10916-009-9336-z"},{"key":"bibr13-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/3-540-33149-2"},{"key":"bibr14-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ejor.2009.06.004"},{"key":"bibr15-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/jos.2014.35"},{"key":"bibr16-0037549716687376","first-page":"86","volume":"3","author":"Dietz JLG","year":"2013","journal-title":"Int J Org Des Eng"},{"key":"bibr17-0037549716687376","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-94-009-9392-1"},{"key":"bibr18-0037549716687376","unstructured":"Dietz JLG, Hoogervorst J.
