A research strategy based on computer simulations is described that gives sociologists a practical quantitative technique for testing social theories and for comparing alternative hypotheses under identical research conditions. The strategy is demonstrated on a social theory of change in normative systems and illustrated with one of the empirical data sets that have been used to test the theory.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978604700202","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,4]],"date-time":"2007-03-04T20:53:41Z","timestamp":1173041621000},"page":"58-62","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Simulation and social theory"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"47","author":[{"given":"Richard","family":"Bronson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Fairleigh Dickinson University Teaneck, NJ 07666"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Chanoch","family":"Jacobsen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management Technion - Israel Institute of Technology Haifa 32000, Israel"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1986,8,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"The Rules of the Sociological Method","author":"Durkheim, Emile","year":"1985"},{"key":"atypb2","volume-title":"Proceedings of IBM Symposium on Simulation Models and Gaming","author":"Guetzow, Harold"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"Simulation in Sc)cial and Administrative Science: Overviews and Case Examples","author":"Guetzow, Harold","year":"1972"},{"key":"atypb4","volume-title":"Simulating Violators","author":"Jacobsen, Chanoch","year":"1985"},{"key":"atypb5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003803857901300205"},{"key":"atypb6","unstructured":"Merton, Robert K.
