This utilization and its complexity are presenting the Department of Defense (DoD) Test and Evaluation (T&E) with major performance evaluation challenges. These challenges will require the utilization of complementary computer models and simulations (M\/S) with testing. To effectively complement testing, it is necessary that the methodology for employing MIS with testing be clearly understood throughout the life cycle of the weapon system. Also, there are four basic M\/S characteristics which will require special attention during the development and utilization of the M\/S capability. These characteristics are: (1) Degree of Representation, (2) Practicality, (3) Validation and (4) Configura tion control. These characteristics will need to receive top priority at all times if MIS is to become a complementary tool for the DoD T&E communities. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754979005400304","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T17:23:43Z","timestamp":1206811423000},"page":"127-132","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Modeling and simulation in the test and evaluation process"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"54","author":[{"given":"James H.","family":"Atkinson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Defense Test and Evaluation Office of the Secretary of Defense \u2014 C3I The Pentagon Washington, D.C."}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1990,3,1]]},"container-title":["SIMULATION"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/003754979005400304","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/003754979005400304","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,3]],"date-time":"2025-03-03T20:31:13Z","timestamp":1741033873000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/003754979005400304"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1990,3]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1990,3]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/003754979005400304"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/003754979005400304","relation":{},"ISSN":["0037-5497","1741-3133"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0037-5497"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1741-3133"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1990,3]]}}}
