The key to making good EFT decisions is understanding the tradeoffs between the costs and performance of different network possibilities. Being able to explore network choices in light of a bank's service and profit goals, prior to the actual commitment of resources, is essential to that understanding. However, there are no published EFT studies which attempt to combine both technical and economic con cerns, particularly the representation of intangible benefits and costs, in a single methodology. The simulation process de scribed here illustrates a computer model that approximates the performance and economics of alternative local EFT designs. Expert system technology is incorporated to give bankers the convenience of interacting with the model in a natural language format. It should be noted that the work described here is based on the author's current research and ongoing model development for client banks. Every attempt is made to be as informative as possible without breaching confidentiality. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754979005400602","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T17:23:43Z","timestamp":1206811423000},"page":"253-264","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Combining an expert system with simulation to enhance planning for banking networks"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"54","author":[{"given":"Pamela K.","family":"Coats","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Business The Florida State University Tallahassee, Florida 32306 (904) 386-9339 (904) 644-4220"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1990,6,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","unstructured":"Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Electronic Fund Transfers: Regulation E (12 CFR 205), effective March 30, 1979, as amended effective May 10, 1980, and January 1981, 27p."},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/MC.1982.1654134"},{"key":"atypb3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/jors.1987.119"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/jors.1985.53"},{"key":"atypb5","first-page":"5","author":"Farley, J.U.","year":"1987","journal-title":"Sloan Management Review"},{"journal-title":"Economic Review","author":"Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta","key":"atypb6"},{"key":"atypb7","unstructured":"Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, \"The Automated Clearing-house Alternative: How Do We Get There From Here?\", Economic Review, April 1986.
