For this purpose, two model problems are considered: i) a reaction-diffusion problem with large Thiele modulus; and ii) a convection-diffusion problem with large Peclet number. Based on a large number of numerical studies, it is concluded that p-extension leads to superior performance due to significantly faster convergence rates coupled with convenience in modeling. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754979306100201","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T17:23:43Z","timestamp":1206811423000},"page":"86-93","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Pointwise Performance of Finite Element Method in the Case of Boundary Layer Problems"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"61","author":[{"given":"Prodyot K.","family":"Basu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Box 15-B Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN 37235"}]},{"given":"George C.","family":"Hsiao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematical Sciences University of Delaware Newark, Delaware 19716"}]},{"given":"Mohammed N.","family":"Akhtar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Structural Engineer Nielsen\/Uzun Structural Engineers, Inc.
