The approach is to break down a 24-hour period into small time durations such that an average arrival rate during the time duration can be reasonably viewed as constant. Discrete event simulation models were developed using SLAM II to evaluate the selection of the length of time durations. The simulation output data were then compared to real data collected from the Emergency Ambulance Service Center in Shanghai, China, a typical system with time-varied arrivals of service requests. Statistical data analyses on the system performance indicated that the 4-hour duration model with six different arrival rates in 24 hours closely matches the operation characteristics of the Shanghai system.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754979406200302","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T13:23:43Z","timestamp":1206797023000},"page":"146-154","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Modeling Time-Varied Arrival Rates: An Application Issue in Queuing Systems"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"62","author":[{"given":"Zhiwei","family":"Zhu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Management The University of Southwestern Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana 70504-3570"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mark A.","family":"McKnew","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Management Clemson University Clemson, South Carolina 19634"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jim","family":"Lee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Engineering Management Program The University of Southwestern Louisiana Lafayette, LA 70504-2250"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1994,3,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"An Examination of Emergency Medical Performance and Quality of Care and Their Impact on Location Planning","author":"Baker, J.R.","year":"1983"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0038-0121(74)90036-6"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"A Spatially Distributed Queuing Model for Ambulance Systems","author":"Burwell, T.H.","year":"1987"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/mnsc.19.6.627"},{"key":"atypb5","volume-title":"Determining the Travel Characteristics of Emergency Service Vehicles","author":"Hausner, J.","year":"1975"},{"key":"atypb6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/opre.26.2.237"},{"key":"atypb7","volume-title":"Measuring the Travel Characteristics of New York City's Fire Companies","author":"Kolesar, P.","year":"1974"},{"key":"atypb8","volume-title":"Urban Emergency Service Systems: An Iterative Procedure for Approximating Performance Characteristics","author":"Larson, R.C.","year":"1974"},{"key":"atypb9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/opre.23.5.845"},{"key":"atypb10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978805100602"},{"key":"atypb11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1540-5915.1983.tb00195.x"},{"key":"atypb12","volume-title":"Introduction to Simulation and SLAM 11, Third Edition","author":"Pritsker, A.A.","year":"1986"},{"key":"atypb13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/mnsc.15.12.B608"},{"key":"atypb14","volume-title":"Systems Simulation","author":"Shannon, R.E.","year":"1975"},{"key":"atypb15","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/003754978404300202"},{"key":"atypb16","volume-title":"A Workload Balancing Optimization Model for Ambulance Location: An Application to Shanghai, P.
