At issue is the ability to accurately simulate human behavior within non-toxic environments, as well as the debilitating effects that toxic environments (e.g., fire and smoke) have on human-decision making. A set of criteria has been identified by the Federal Aviation Administration for developing simulation models capable of analyzing commer cial aircraft-cabin egress. These criteria are used to (a) compare the capabilities and limitations of four aircraft-evacuation models in existence to day, (b) identify the issues that need to be ad dressed when developing these types of models, and (c) propose a new paradigm for developing aircraft-cabin egress models.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/003754979907300404","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,29]],"date-time":"2008-03-29T13:23:43Z","timestamp":1206797023000},"page":"218-231","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Commercial Aircraft-Cabin Egress: The Current State of Simulation Model Development and the Need for Future Research"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"73","author":[{"given":"M.C.","family":"Court","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"The University of Oklahoma School of Industrial Engineering Norman, Oklahoma, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1999,10,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"Senior Analyst for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, Technical Meeting: FAA Evacuation Model Parameter Sensitivity Study","author":"Shook, W.","year":"1995"},{"key":"atypb2","volume":"61","author":"Dornheim, M.A.","year":"1993","journal-title":"Aviation Week and Space Technology"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"A Review of Computer Evacuation Models and Their Data Needs","author":"Marcus, J.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb4","volume-title":"Manager of the Protection and Survivability Laboratory, for the Federal Aviation Administration at the Civil Aeromedical Institute","author":"Marcus, J.H.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb5","volume-title":"AGARD Conference Proceedings 587: Aircraft Fire Safety","author":"Court, M.C."},{"key":"atypb6","volume-title":"Technical Discussion (via Telephone): FAA Evacuation Model Parameter Sensitivity Study","author":"Schroeder, J.E.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb7","volume-title":"Simulation of Evacuation from a Single-Aisle Airplane: A Comprehensive Report","author":"Gourary, B.S.","year":"1993"},{"key":"atypb8","volume-title":"PC-Based Simulation of the Evacuation of Passengers from a Transport Airplane","author":"Gourary, B.S.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb9","volume-title":"Evacuation Model Parameter Sensitivity Study: Project Progress.\" Technical Report, School of Industrial Engineering","author":"Jayarama, S.","year":"1996"},{"key":"atypb10","volume-title":"Development of an Aircraft Evacuation (AIREVAC) Computer Model, Phase I: Front End Analysis and Data Collection.\" Technical Report: SwRI Project Number 12-4099","author":"Schroeder, J.E.","year":"1991"},{"key":"atypb11","volume-title":"Development of ARCEVAC An Emergency Evacuation Simulation Model\u2014Beta Version 1.0.\" Transport Canada Technical Report: rjs-92-122","author":"Aviation Research Corporation.","year":"1994"},{"key":"atypb12","volume-title":"EXODUS: An Evacuation Model for Mass Transport Vehicles.\" Civil Aviation Authority Technical Report: CAA Paper 93006","author":"Galea, E.R.","year":"1993"},{"key":"atypb13","volume-title":"AGARD Conference Proceedings 587: Aircraft Fire Safety","author":"Galea, E.R."},{"key":"atypb14","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/mnsc.34.12.1425"}],"container-title":["SIMULATION"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/003754979907300404","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/003754979907300404","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,1]],"date-time":"2026-05-01T11:13:11Z","timestamp":1777633991000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/003754979907300404"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1999,10]]},"references-count":14,"journal-issue":{"issue":"4","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1999,10]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/003754979907300404"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/003754979907300404","relation":{},"ISSN":["0037-5497","1741-3133"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0037-5497","type":"print"},{"value":"1741-3133","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1999,10]]}}}
