We address this need by analyzing 21st-century television depictions of science and examining the relationships between exposure to television and attitudes toward science with an analysis of 2006 General Social Survey data. Content results show that scientists appear infrequently in prime-time dramatic programs, are typically White males, and are frequently cast in good or mixed roles rather than as evil scientists. Regarding the cultivation effect, we do not find a significant direct relationship between television viewing and negative attitudes toward science after relevant controls are taken into account. Additional results, however, indicate a displacement effect of television viewing on science attitudes and show significant interaction effects consistent with mainstreaming.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0093650210384988","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,12,14]],"date-time":"2010-12-14T21:23:53Z","timestamp":1292361833000},"page":"754-777","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":111,"title":["Science on Television in the 21st Century"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"38","author":[{"given":"Anthony","family":"Dudo","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Wisconsin-Madison"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Dominique","family":"Brossard","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Wisconsin-Madison"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"James","family":"Shanahan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Boston University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Dietram A.","family":"Scheufele","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Wisconsin-Madison"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Michael","family":"Morgan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Massachusetts-Amherst"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Nancy","family":"Signorielli","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Delaware"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,12,14]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0963662506070159"},{"key":"bibr2-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1075547005275443"},{"key":"bibr3-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/ijpor\/edl003"},{"key":"bibr4-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0002716296546001005"},{"key":"bibr5-0093650210384988","volume-title":"Applied multiple regression\/correlation analysis for the behavioral sciences","author":"Cohen J.","year":"2003"},{"key":"bibr6-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0021-9010.78.1.98"},{"key":"bibr7-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/17524030903509709"},{"key":"bibr8-0093650210384988","volume-title":"Paper presented at the meeting of Annual Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research Conference","author":"Dudo A."},{"key":"bibr9-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/107769909707400211"},{"key":"bibr10-0093650210384988","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/105846000414250"},{"key":"bibr11-0093650210384988","unstructured":"General Social Survey (2010).
