Generally, academics regarded peer review as beneficial to improving their article and felt that peer review contributed significantly to the effectiveness of scholarly communication. Academics agreed that peer review could improve the readability and quality of the published paper, as well as check for accuracy, appropriate methodology, novelty and relevance to the journal. There are significant differences in the views of respondents on the basis of role, with those involved as reviewers and editors being less positive about peer review than authors. In addition, there is evidence of some disciplinary differences in views on the benefits of peer review.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0165551517740821","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,11,14]],"date-time":"2017-11-14T09:40:25Z","timestamp":1510652425000},"page":"644-657","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Academics\u2019 attitudes towards peer review in scholarly journals and the effect of role and discipline"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"44","author":[{"given":"Jennifer","family":"Rowley","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Languages, Information and Communications, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Laura","family":"Sbaffi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information School, University of Sheffield, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,11,14]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-0165551517740821","volume-title":"Peer review: benefits, perceptions and alternatives","author":"Ware M.","year":"2008"},{"key":"bibr2-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.socscimed.2011.02.002"},{"key":"bibr3-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1087\/20150104"},{"key":"bibr4-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.22798"},{"key":"bibr5-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1087\/20140206"},{"key":"bibr6-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.23598"},{"key":"bibr7-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.23710."},{"key":"bibr8-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.emj.2015.12.004"},{"key":"bibr9-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1418218112"},{"key":"bibr10-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.22784"},{"key":"bibr11-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.23317"},{"key":"bibr12-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.lisr.2014.08.002"},{"key":"bibr13-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.23307"},{"key":"bibr14-0165551517740821","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/asi.23711"}],"container-title":["Journal of Information Science"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0165551517740821","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full-xml\/10.1177\/0165551517740821","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0165551517740821","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,29]],"date-time":"2026-04-29T23:08:32Z","timestamp":1777504112000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0165551517740821"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2017,11,14]]},"references-count":14,"journal-issue":{"issue":"5","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2018,10]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/0165551517740821"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0165551517740821","relation":{},"ISSN":["0165-5515","1741-6485"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0165-5515","type":"print"},{"value":"1741-6485","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2017,11,14]]}}}
