In three conditions with high cognitive demands, participants learned to quilt, learned digital photography, or engaged in both activities for an average of 16.51 hr a week for 3 months. Results at posttest indicated that episodic memory was enhanced in these productive-engagement conditions relative to receptive-engagement conditions, in which participants either engaged in nonintellectual activities with a social group or performed low-demand cognitive tasks with no social contact. The findings suggest that sustained engagement in cognitively demanding, novel activities enhances memory function in older adulthood, but, somewhat surprisingly, we found limited cognitive benefits of sustained engagement in social activities.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0956797613499592","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,11,8]],"date-time":"2013-11-08T22:14:14Z","timestamp":1383948854000},"page":"103-112","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":353,"title":["The Impact of Sustained Engagement on Cognitive Function in Older Adults"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"25","author":[{"given":"Denise C.","family":"Park","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"},{"name":"School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jennifer","family":"Lodi-Smith","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Psychology, Canisius College"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Linda","family":"Drew","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Sara","family":"Haber","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Andrew","family":"Hebrank","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"G\u00e9rard N.","family":"Bischof","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"},{"name":"School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Whitley","family":"Aamodt","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Vital Longevity, University of Texas at Dallas"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,11,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/nature12486"},{"key":"bibr2-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1001\/jama.288.18.2271"},{"key":"bibr3-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/a0013494"},{"key":"bibr4-0956797613499592","volume-title":"Statistical estimates and transformed beta variables","author":"Blom G.","year":"1958"},{"key":"bibr5-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/13854049108403297"},{"key":"bibr6-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/geront\/48.6.793"},{"key":"bibr7-0956797613499592","first-page":"3","volume":"14","author":"Dixon R.","year":"1984","journal-title":"Psychological Documents"},{"key":"bibr8-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3758\/BF03203267"},{"key":"bibr9-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1001\/archpsyc.1983.01790060110016"},{"key":"bibr10-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1539-6053.2009.01034.x"},{"key":"bibr11-0956797613499592","first-page":"65","volume":"6","author":"Holm S.","year":"1979","journal-title":"Scandinavian Journal of Statistics"},{"key":"bibr12-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0001-6918(67)90011-X"},{"key":"bibr13-0956797613499592","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0898264304265819"},{"key":"bibr14-0956797613499592","volume-title":"Psychometric theory","author":"Nunnally J.
