This research work focussed on the implementation of advanced control theory for the reduction of SO\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    coming out from thermal power plants. Flue gas desulphurization technique in which packed column is used for gas\u2013liquid mass transfer by externally adding H\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    with H\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    SO\n                    <jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>\n                    as the scrubbing liquid. The concept of fractional calculus has tremendous potential to improve the controller performance. Hence, the fractional calculus is incorporated with coefficient diagram method to tune the proportional\u2013integral\u2013derivative controller, and it is named as fractional-order-based coefficient diagram method (FOCDM-PI\n                    <jats:sup>\u03bb<\/jats:sup>\n                    D\n                    <jats:sup>\u00b5<\/jats:sup>\n                    ) controller. Flow rate of externally added H\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    is regulated by fractional-order-based coefficient diagram method PI\n                    <jats:sup>\u03bb<\/jats:sup>\n                    D\n                    <jats:sup>\u00b5<\/jats:sup>\n                    controller tuned by particle swarm optimization algorithm. The performance of fractional-order-based coefficient diagram method controller is analysed and compared with the classical controllers such as Ziegler\u2013Nichols proportional\u2013integral\u2013derivative and coefficient diagram method\u2013based proportional\u2013integral\u2013derivative controller in a lab-scale SO\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    emission control experimental setup.\n
