Explains that the quality of research is assessed through the RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) but that research also plays a fundamental role in the teaching activities of departments. Describes how research is incorporated into the teaching curriculum by: drawing on research undertaken by members of departmental staff; the involvement of research staff in classes; teaching and learning activities involving practical research exercises; inquiry-based learning; the incorporation of others\u2019 research into teaching. A taught research methods course with dissertation is also discussed, which ensures that students have the practical skills necessary to carry out their own research projects.
