In many cases, this has led to interpretations of early technology that overemphasize its human-like features. By eschewing an epistemic mediator, 4E approaches to cognition (embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended) are in a better position to make appropriate evaluations of early hominin technical cognition that emphasize its continuity with non-human primates and ground a description of the evolution of hominin technology. This essay takes some initial steps in that direction by shifting focus away from tool types and knapping patterns toward a description based on ergonomics and Gibsonian affordances. The analysis points to the evolutionary importance of two hitherto underappreciated aspects of hominin technical systems\u2014the emergence of ergonomic clusters instantiated in artifact form and the development of displaced affordances.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1059712320932333","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,9]],"date-time":"2020-07-09T06:29:37Z","timestamp":1594276177000},"page":"181-195","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":28,"title":["Ergonomic clusters and displaced affordances in early lithic technology"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"29","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4341-3564","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Thomas","family":"Wynn","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Anthropology, University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO, USA"},{"name":"Center for Cognitive Archaeology, University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1059712320932333","volume-title":"Cognitive foundations of natural history: Towards an anthropology of science","author":"Atran S.","year":"1990"},{"key":"bibr2-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1059712320941543"},{"key":"bibr3-1059712320932333","volume-title":"First sculpture: Handaxe to figure stone","author":"Berlant T.","year":"2018"},{"key":"bibr4-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10437-006-9006-1"},{"key":"bibr5-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9781139149327.011"},{"key":"bibr6-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1475-4754.2008.00393.x"},{"key":"bibr7-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.jas.2009.03.025"},{"key":"bibr8-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.jas.2008.01.015"},{"key":"bibr9-1059712320932333","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Bril B., Parry R., Dietrich G.
