In this article, we investigate the possibility of using learned landmark features to self-orient an autonomous agent in a partially known environment. A model is suggested that incorporates an artificial head-direction system for emulating the behavior of head-direction cell ensembles in biological systems, a lattice-based dynamic cell structure for categorizing and classifying environmental features, and an expectancy-based learning mechanism that learns to associate each head direction with a certain environmental feature. Our experimental results show that the suggested model is capable of correcting the drift in the orientation estimated by dead-reckoning.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/105971239800600308","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,11]],"date-time":"2007-03-11T01:45:25Z","timestamp":1173577525000},"page":"535-566","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Self-Orienting with On-Line Learning of Environmental Features"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"6","author":[{"family":"Guang Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden"}]},{"given":"Anders","family":"Lansner","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden"}]},{"given":"Bertil","family":"Svensson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1998,1,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"A thalamocortical circuit for computing directional heading in the rat","author":"Blair, H.T.","year":"1996"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1523\/JNEUROSCI.15-09-06260.1995"},{"key":"atypb3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF00243212"},{"key":"atypb4","first-page":"24","volume":"101","author":"Chen, L.L.","year":"1994","journal-title":"Contributions of visual and ideothetic information to the directional firing.
