It has been known that the system executes complex processes automatically and manages them effectively to improve the productivities. However, though existing systems assure the automatic execution of an individual process, there is room for enhancement from the view of efficient execution of all the processes. In this paper, we propose a method of executing business processes efficiently by introducing the PERT\/CPM techniques in the workflow management systems. We first consider the differences between workflow process models and PERT\/CPM models, and then develop a method of calculating the critical path and slack time in workflow processes. This leads us to develop a dispatching rule that can guide task performers to prioritize their tasks to increase the efficiency of all the processes. We have carried out a set of simulation experiments and analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293x04042471","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,11,19]],"date-time":"2004-11-19T06:37:58Z","timestamp":1100846278000},"page":"305-318","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":13,"title":["A Dispatching Rule for Efficient Workflow"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Seung-Hyun","family":"Rhee","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering, Seoul National University, Seoul,\r 151-742, Republic of Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocab":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Hyerim","family":"Bae","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering, Pusan National University, Pusan,\r 609-735, Republic of Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocab":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yeongho","family":"Kim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering, Seoul National University, Seoul,\r 151-742, Republic of Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocab":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,12,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0950-5849(99)00016-6"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Arpinar, I.B.\n , \n Halici, U.\n , \n Arpinar, S.\n and \n Dogac, A.\n (1999).
