Product customization is an important strategy for accomplishing customer satisfaction with exclusive products at reasonable prices. This paper proposes a decision support system for facilitating design and customer collaboration in the process of selecting product configuration in MC environments. The system integrates object-oriented programming, multiattribute decision analysis, and integer linear programming to support product\/service customization where customer choice is managed by the relative relevance of a set of attributes as well as a set of component combinations offered by the company, and restrained by a set of technical, aesthetical, and financial constraints defined interactively by designers and customers. The integration of these models results in the representation of the MC business process taking into account simultaneously the technical, explicit, and objective view taken by designers and the customer\u2019s view based on intentions and perceptions. Using the system, the customer can define rules and provide information that can be used to represent tacit knowledge which is incorporated in an integer linear programming (ILP) model that optimizes the utility of a specific customer. As a result, the computer system is capable of implementing in an explicit, dynamic, and flexible way the cognitive process that characterizes the product configuration in MC strategy. The DSS can be considered as a concurrent engineering environment for MC production systems. A simple case study is presented that demonstrate how the program is utilized and the type of output it provides.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293x04044382","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,5,27]],"date-time":"2004-05-27T22:29:13Z","timestamp":1085696953000},"page":"131-144","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":36,"title":["Decision Support System for Product Configuration in Mass Customization Environments"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Juan Diego","family":"Frutos","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Eduardo Ribas","family":"Santos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Escole de Administrcao, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Rua\r Washington Luis 855, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Denis","family":"Borenstein","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Rua Washington Luis 855, Porto\r Alegre, RS, Brazil."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0377-2217(86)90155-4"},{"key":"atypb2","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 33rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","author":"Benjamin P."},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"RECO: Representation and Evaluation of Configurable Offers","author":"Bichler, M.","year":"2002"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF01350769"},{"key":"atypb5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293X02010002635"},{"key":"atypb6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0272-6963(00)00043-7"},{"key":"atypb7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4135\/9781412985123"},{"key":"atypb8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/00137919008903008"},{"key":"atypb9","volume-title":"Decision Theory: An Introduction to the Mathematics of Rationality","author":"French, S.","year":"1988"},{"key":"atypb10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1061\/(ASCE)0733-9364(2003)129:3(302)"},{"issue":"1","key":"atypb11","first-page":"30","volume":"13","author":"Gonzalez-Zugasti, J.P.","year":"2001","journal-title":"Research in Engineering Design-Theory Applications and Concurrent Engineering"},{"key":"atypb12","first-page":"350","volume-title":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering and Technology Management","author":"Haglind, M."},{"key":"atypb13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1108\/09564239510084932"},{"key":"atypb14","volume-title":"Towards High Value-added Products and Services: Mass Customization and Beyond","author":"Jiao, J.","year":"2001"},{"key":"atypb15","volume-title":"Decision with Multiple Objectives: Preferences and Value Trade-Offs","author":"Keeney, R.L.","year":"1976"},{"key":"atypb16","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/258941"},{"issue":"5","key":"atypb17","first-page":"18","volume":"37","author":"Lau, R.","year":"1995","journal-title":"Industrial Management"},{"key":"atypb18","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0737-6782(98)00034-4"},{"key":"atypb19","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0166-4972(90)90015-C"},{"key":"atypb20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0957-4174(01)00030-6"},{"issue":"5","key":"atypb21","first-page":"108","volume":"71","author":"Pine, B.J.
