The goal is to achieve design flexibility and robustness while capturing designer's preference. The proposed design approach includes three computational methods: (1) set representation method to specify the varying degree of desirability of a ranged set of design solutions and performance requirements, thereby enabling the manipulation of uncertain design solutions and requirements based on designer's preference structure; (2) set propagation method to obtain performance possibilities achievable by uncertain design solutions, thus exploring a broader design possibilities; (3) set narrowing method to generate a ranged set of feasible solutions (i.e., robust and flexible solution set) instead of single point solution that satisfies changing sets of performance requirements by eliminating infeasible and inferior subsets of solutions, thus allowing designs to be readily adapted to changing conditions. Finally, the proposed design approach is illustrated with a successful implementation of real industrial design problem (i.e., vehicle side-door structure design) in the simulation-based design environment.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293x07077058","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,7]],"date-time":"2007-03-07T07:41:38Z","timestamp":1173253298000},"page":"53-62","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":13,"title":["A Flexible and Robust Approach for Preliminary Engineering Design Based on Designer's Preference"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"15","author":[{"given":"Yoon-Eui","family":"Nahm","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Design Engineering, Division of Mechanical Engineering, Hanbat National University, San 16-1, Duckmyoung-Dong, Yuseong-Gu Daejeon 305-719, Korea;"}]},{"given":"Haruo","family":"Ishikawa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Systems, Division of Electro-Communications, The University of Electro-Communications, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofushi Tokyo 182-8585, Japan"}]},{"given":"Young-Soon","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, College of Engineering, Seoul National University, San 56-1, Sillim-Dong, Kwanak-Gu, Seoul 151-744, Korea"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,1]]},"reference":[{"issue":"2","key":"atypb1","first-page":"67","volume":"40","author":"Sobek II, D.K.","year":"1999","journal-title":"Sloan Management Review"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1115\/1.2829433"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"DETC'96: ASME 1996 Design Engineering Technical Conference","author":"Law, W.S.","year":"1996"},{"key":"atypb4","volume-title":"DETC'99: ASME 1999 Design Engineering Technical Conference","author":"Lu, S.C.Y.","year":"1999"},{"key":"atypb5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1115\/1.3259045"},{"key":"atypb6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0165-0114(87)90163-1"},{"key":"atypb7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0165-0114(02)00045-3"},{"key":"atypb8","volume-title":"DETC'96: ASME 1996 Design Engineering Technical Conference","author":"Finch, W.W.","year":"1996"},{"key":"atypb9","volume-title":"DETC'97: ASME 1997 Design Engineering Technical Conference","author":"Finch, W.W.","year":"1997"},{"key":"atypb10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293X05053797"},{"key":"atypb11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/PL00007198"},{"key":"atypb12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-94-010-0646-0"},{"issue":"4","key":"atypb13","first-page":"300","volume":"2","author":"Luoh, L.","year":"2000","journal-title":"International Journal of Fuzzy System"},{"key":"atypb14","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0165-0114(97)00032-8"},{"key":"atypb15","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1063293X9700500302"},{"key":"atypb16","volume-title":"Proceedings of 2003 ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference","author":"Yannou, B."}],"container-title":["Concurrent Engineering"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1063293X07077058","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1063293X07077058","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,28]],"date-time":"2026-04-28T14:48:09Z","timestamp":1777387689000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1063293X07077058"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2007,3]]},"references-count":16,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2007,3]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/1063293X07077058"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/1063293x07077058","relation":{},"ISSN":["1063-293X","1531-2003"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1063-293X","type":"print"},{"value":"1531-2003","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2007,3]]}}}
