Due to the data dependences resulting from the polar singularity of the latitude-longitude coordinate system, we employ two separate domain decompositions within the dynamical core: one in latitude\/level space and the other in longitude\/latitude space. This requires that the data be periodically redistributed between these two decompositions. In addition, the domains contain halo regions that cover the nearest-neighbor data dependences. A combination of several techniques, such as one-sided communication and multithreading, are presented to optimize data movements. The resulting algorithm is shown to scale to very large machine configurations, even for relatively coarse resolutions. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1094342005056096","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,10,14]],"date-time":"2005-10-14T12:13:41Z","timestamp":1129292021000},"page":"203-212","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":30,"title":["A Scalable Implementation of a Finite-Volume Dynamical Core in the Community Atmosphere Model"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"19","author":[{"given":"Arthur A.","family":"Mirin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Applied Scientific Computing Lawrence Livermore National\r Laboratory Livermore, CA 94550, USA,"}]},{"given":"William B.","family":"Sawyer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) R\u00e4mistrasse 101,\r 8092 Zurich, Switzerland"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,8,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","first-page":"173","volume":"17","author":"Arakawa, A.","year":"1977","journal-title":"Methods in Computational Physics"},{"volume-title":"Description of the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM 3.0)","year":"2004","author":"Collins, W.
