To create exascale systems and software that will enable the US Department of Energy (DOE) to meet the science goals critical to the nation\u2019s energy, ecological sustainability, and global security, we must focus on major architecture, software, algorithm, and data challenges, and build on newly emerging programming environments. Only with this new infrastructure will applications be able to scale up to the required levels of parallelism and integrate technologies into complex coupled systems for real-world multidisciplinary modeling and simulation. Achieving this goal will likely involve a shift from current static approaches for application development and execution to a combination of new software tools, algorithms, and dynamically adaptive methods. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1094342009347445","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,9,10]],"date-time":"2009-09-10T00:35:24Z","timestamp":1252542924000},"page":"427-436","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":44,"title":["Major Computer Science Challenges At Exascale"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"23","author":[{"given":"Al","family":"Geist","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY, ROAD, OAK RIDGE, TN,\rUSA,"}]},{"given":"Robert","family":"Lucas","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES DIVISION, INFORMATION SCIENCES\rINSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, MARINA DEL REY, CA, USA,"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,9,9]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Final Report from Exascale Townhall Meetings","author":"Breakout Group Seven","key":"atypb1"},{"volume-title":"ASCR Computer Science Research Principal Investigators Meeting","author":"Geist, A.","key":"atypb2"},{"volume-title":"Workshop on CS\/ Math Institutes and High Risk\/High Payoff Technologies for Applications Preliminary Report, October 2008","year":"2008","author":"Geist, A.","key":"atypb3"},{"volume-title":"Workshop on Visual Analysis and Data Exploration at Extreme Scale final report, October 2007","author":"Johnson, C.","key":"atypb4"},{"volume-title":"The Scientific Data Analysis Process at the Petascale","year":"2008","author":"Kamath, C.","key":"atypb5"},{"volume-title":"Workshop on Mathematics for Analysis of Petascale Data final report, June 2008","year":"2008","author":"Kegelmeyer, P.","key":"atypb6"},{"volume-title":"Exascale computing study: technology challenges in achieving exascale systems, September 2008","year":"2008","author":"Kogge, P.","key":"atypb7"},{"volume-title":"ASCR Computer Science Research Principal Investigators Meeting","author":"Ross, R.","key":"atypb8"},{"volume-title":"Exascale software study, DARPA","year":"2008","author":"Sarkar V.","key":"atypb9"},{"volume-title":"Final report","year":"2007","author":"Vetter, J.","key":"atypb10"}],"container-title":["The International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1094342009347445","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1094342009347445","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,2]],"date-time":"2025-03-02T22:56:59Z","timestamp":1740956219000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1094342009347445"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2009,9,9]]},"references-count":10,"journal-issue":{"issue":"4","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009,11]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1177\/1094342009347445"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/1094342009347445","relation":{},"ISSN":["1094-3420","1741-2846"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1094-3420"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1741-2846"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2009,9,9]]}}}
