The focus is on high-resolution weather prediction. Performance analysis shows the simpler structure of the A-grid equations enables compiler optimization-based efficiency gains that the C-grid equations cannot match. Strong scaling runs at 3.5\u00a0km resolution show the A-grid is three times faster than the C-grid, enabling the A-grid to run at 50% higher resolution in only 15% more time. A performance comparison with the MPAS shallow-water model is included which demonstrates that our software implementation of the C-grid is robust and comparisons are fair.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/10943420221139509","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,15]],"date-time":"2022-11-15T05:09:13Z","timestamp":1668488953000},"page":"197-208","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Performance comparison of the A-grid and C-grid shallow-water models on icosahedral grids"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"37","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5305-8714","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jacques","family":"Middlecoff","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, and Global Systems Laboratory, NOAA\/Earth System Research Laboratories, Boulder, CO, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yonggang G","family":"Yu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, CO, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mark W","family":"Govett","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, and Global Systems Laboratory, NOAA\/Earth System Research Laboratories, Boulder, CO, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-10943420221139509","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Arakawa A, Lamb VR, 1977: Computational design of the basic dynamical processes of the UCLA general circulation model.
