Each processor performs many writes of 1 to 4 kilobytes to reorganize local data in a global shared file. The findings suggest having a single processor collect data and per form large block-contiguous operations may be quite effi cient and portable for up to 32 processor configurations. This approach does not scale well for a larger number of processors because the single processor becomes a bot tleneck for gathering data. The effective application I\/O rate observed, which includes times for opening and clos ing files, is only a fraction of the peak device read\/write rates. Some form of data redistribution and buffering in remote memory as performed in EDONIO may yield sig nificant improvements for noncontiguous data I\/O access patterns and short requests. Implementors of parallel I\/O systems may consider some form of buffering as per formed in EDONIO to speed up such I\/O requirements.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/109434209801200301","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,11]],"date-time":"2007-03-11T03:54:27Z","timestamp":1173585267000},"page":"307-319","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["A Study of I\/o in a pArallel Finite Element Groundwater Transport Code"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"David","family":"Mackay","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"INTEL CORPORATION, HILLSBORO, OREGON, U.S.A."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"G.","family":"Mahinthakumar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Ed","family":"D'Azevedo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE, U.S.A."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1998,9,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"D'Azevedo, E.F., and Romine, C.H. 1995a.
