This rhetoric is largely dominated by liberal individualist assumptions. Communitarianism has provided a resource for an alternative vision of electronic democracy. A third model, deliberative democracy, has recently been employed by electronic democrats who want to move beyond the individualism\/communitarianism opposition. In this article, I outline each of these visions, describing the democratic assumptions and electronic democracy practices that each embraces. In particular, I explore the ways in which each vision sees the internet as aiding its cause. I conclude by pointing to the relative lack of research into the possibility of the deliberative position being realized through cyberspace. I suggest that a more regorous analysis of the intersection between the internet and deliberative democracy would not only be sociologically fruitful but may provide interesting possibilities for enhancing contemporary democratic forms.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/14614440122226038","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,7,19]],"date-time":"2003-07-19T01:53:44Z","timestamp":1058579624000},"page":"157-177","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":85,"title":["Democracy via Cyberspace"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"LINCOLN","family":"DAHLBERG","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Massey University, New Zealand"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2001,6,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"Koukyoken to Komyunikashion (Communication and Public Sphere)","author":"Abe, K."},{"key":"atypb2","volume-title":"The Electronic Commonwealth: The Impact of New Media Technologies on Democratic Politics","author":"Abramson, J.B."},{"key":"atypb3","unstructured":"Aikens, S.G.
