With a global market volume exceeding US$40 billion, music is not only one of the primary entertainment goods in its own right. Since music is easily personalized and transmitted, it also permeates many other services across cultural borders, anticipating social and economic trends. This article presents one of the first detailed empirical studies on the impact of internet technologies on a specific industry. Drawing on more than 100 interviews conducted between 1996 and 2000 with multinational and independent music companies in 10 markets, strategies of the major players, current business models, future scenarios and regulatory responses to the online distribution of music files are identified and evaluated. The data suggest that changes in the music industry will indeed be far-reaching, but disintermediation is not the likely outcome.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/14614440122226164","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,7,19]],"date-time":"2003-07-19T01:53:44Z","timestamp":1058579624000},"page":"417-441","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Music in Electronic Markets"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Martin","family":"Kretschmer","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Bournemouth University"}]},{"given":"George Michael","family":"Klimis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"City University Business School, London"}]},{"given":"Roger","family":"Wallis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2001,12,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"Increasing Returns and Path Dependence in the Economy","author":"Arthur, W.B."},{"key":"atypb2","first-page":"100","author":"Arthur, W.B.","year":"1996","journal-title":"Harvard Business Review"},{"key":"atypb3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/2295952"},{"issue":"3","key":"atypb4","first-page":"84","volume":"2","author":"Barlow, J.P.","year":"1994","journal-title":"Wired"},{"issue":"10","key":"atypb5","first-page":"238","volume":"8","author":"Barlow, J.P.","year":"2000","journal-title":"Wired"},{"key":"atypb6","volume-title":"ESRC Report","author":"Boden, M."},{"key":"atypb7","volume-title":"Creative Industries: Contracts between Arts and Commerce","author":"Caves, R.E."},{"key":"atypb8","first-page":"51","volume-title":"Qualitative Methods and Analysis in Organizational Research","author":"Chell, E."},{"key":"atypb9","first-page":"67","author":"Courtney, H.","year":"1997","journal-title":"Harvard Business Review"},{"key":"atypb10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0263-2373(99)00011-0"},{"key":"atypb11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1086\/466756"},{"issue":"5","key":"atypb12","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.5210\/fm.v5i5.745","volume":"5","author":"Dolfsma, W.","year":"2000","journal-title":"First Monday"},{"key":"atypb13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/08109029508629187"},{"key":"atypb14","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Drahos, P.
