Drawing on perspectives of environmental risk, this article addresses the question through a nationally representative telephone survey of 1200 adults who go online at home. A key result is that a substantial percentage of internet users believes that major corporate or government institutions will both help them to protect information privacy and take that privacy away by disclosing information to other parties without permission. This finding and others raise questions about the dynamics of risk-perception and institutional trust on the web.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444807072219","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,21]],"date-time":"2007-03-21T08:22:54Z","timestamp":1174465374000},"page":"300-318","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":59,"title":["Internet privacy and institutional trust"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Joseph","family":"Turow","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennylvania, USA,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Michael","family":"Hennessy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennylvania, USA,"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,4,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/2297111"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Cohen, M.
