Among the most significant developments in the 2004 US presidential election were strategies and tools designed to facilitate the transition from online to off-line engagement, thus strengthening field operations in a campaign where the ground game proved to be a crucial asset. These topics are addressed through in-depth qualitative interviews with senior aides to the e-campaigns of George W. Bush and John F. Kerry. Online political communication professionals predict that in the future the internet will become an increasingly relevant tool in campaigns and that its functions will be adopted all through the campaign organization. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444808093735","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,7,31]],"date-time":"2008-07-31T16:19:04Z","timestamp":1217521144000},"page":"647-665","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":49,"title":["From the air to the ground: the internet in the 2004 US presidential campaign"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"10","author":[{"given":"Cristian","family":"Vaccari","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bologna, Italy"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2008,8,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0267323106066638"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511615573"},{"key":"atypb3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1093\/oso\/9780195151558.001.0001","volume-title":"Campaigning Online:The Internet in US Elections","author":"Bimber, B.","year":"2003"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1468-2885.2005.tb00340.x"},{"key":"atypb5","volume-title":"The Permanent Campaign","author":"Blumenthal, S.","year":"1982"},{"key":"atypb6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/105846099198596"},{"key":"atypb7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0163443706059289"},{"key":"atypb8","volume-title":"Politics Moves Online: Campaigning and the Internet","author":"Cornfield, M.","year":"2004"},{"key":"atypb9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/10584600590933160"},{"key":"atypb10","unstructured":"Ezra, M. and C.
