This research situates virtual cosmopolitanism in the age of new media and globalization, describing it as a means for trans-local and transnational community-building for social justice movements and activism, including community liaison-building across corporeal borders and boundaries. New media as a site of imagined communities that become larger than their component parts is then analyzed through examining several virtual cosmopolitan communities. The essay concludes with assumptions about the qualities of virtual cosmopolitan communities, and recommendations for how they can facilitate intercultural liaisons for social justice activism and community-building across difference.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444814567988","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,1,27]],"date-time":"2015-01-27T22:56:03Z","timestamp":1422399363000},"page":"1715-1731","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":54,"title":["Virtual intercultural bridgework: Social media, virtual cosmopolitanism, and activist community-building"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"18","author":[{"given":"Miriam","family":"Sobr\u00e9-Denton","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Texas at San Antonio, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,7,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444814567988","volume-title":"Modernity at Large: Cultural Dimensions of Globalization","author":"Appadurai A","year":"1996"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444814567988","volume-title":"Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers","author":"Appiah KA","year":"2006"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444814567988","unstructured":"Brice A (2010) Guatemalan lawyer arranged own slaying, UN panel says.
