Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) provides a uniquely apt case for considering the conceptual link between mental disability and media technology. Tracing the history of the disorder through its various media connections and connotations, we propose a narrative of the transition from impaired sociability in person to fluent social media by network. New media introduce new affordances for people with ASD: The Internet provides habitat free of the burdens of face-to-face encounters, high-tech industry fares well with the purported special abilities of those with Asperger\u2019s syndrome, and digital technology offers a rich metaphorical depository for the condition as a whole. Running throughout is a gender bias that brings communication and technology into the fray of biology versus culture. Autism invites us to rethink our assumptions about communication in the digital age, accounting for both the pains and possibilities it entails.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444815594441","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,7,8]],"date-time":"2015-07-08T21:24:27Z","timestamp":1436390667000},"page":"2507-2523","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":46,"title":["Autism and new media: Disability between technology and society"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"18","author":[{"given":"Amit","family":"Pinchevski","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"John Durham","family":"Peters","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The University of Iowa, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,7,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444815594441","volume-title":"Neurodiversity: Discovering the Extraordinary Gifts of Autism, ADHD","author":"Armstrong T","year":"2010"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444815594441","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511526770.002"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444815594441","volume-title":"Assange: The Unauthorized Autobiography","author":"Assange J","year":"2011"},{"key":"bibr4-1461444815594441","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.7551\/mitpress\/4635.001.0001"},{"key":"bibr5-1461444815594441","volume-title":"The Essential Difference: Male and Female Brains and the Truth about Autism","author":"Baron-Cohen S","year":"2003"},{"key":"bibr6-1461444815594441","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/scientificamerican1112-72"},{"key":"bibr7-1461444815594441","volume-title":"Steps to an Ecology of Mind","author":"Bateson G","year":"1972"},{"key":"bibr8-1461444815594441","volume-title":"The Ecstasy of Communication","author":"Baudrillard J","year":"1988"},{"key":"bibr9-1461444815594441","volume-title":"Charles Baudelaire: A Lyric Poet in the Era of High Capitalism","author":"Benjamin W","year":"1973"},{"key":"bibr10-1461444815594441","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/scientificamerican0359-116"},{"key":"bibr11-1461444815594441","volume-title":"The Informed Heart","author":"Bettelheim B","year":"1960"},{"key":"bibr12-1461444815594441","unstructured":"Blincoe N (2004) Feeling frail.
