However, this research has mostly compared categories of users only. In addition, the role of attitudes in digital inequalities has been largely overlooked. This article addresses these limitations by performing a systematic analysis of factors that distinguish low Internet users from non-users, regular users, and broad users. In addition to socio-demographic characteristics, we examine attitudinal variables. Results drawn from multinomial regressions indicate that attitudes play at least as large a role as socio-economic factors in determining the likelihood of belonging to specific (non-)user categories. This identifies positive attitudes toward technologies and the Internet as a crucial step toward Internet adoption. Hence, digital inequality research needs to consider factors other than traditional socio-economic ones to draw a complete picture.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444815621539","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,12,28]],"date-time":"2015-12-28T20:33:31Z","timestamp":1451334811000},"page":"1157-1176","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":123,"title":["Internet (non-)use types and motivational access: Implications for digital inequalities research"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"19","author":[{"given":"Bianca C","family":"Reisdorf","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University, USA"}]},{"given":"Darja","family":"Groselj","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia; University of Ljubljana, Slovenia"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,12,27]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444815621539","volume-title":"Discovering Structural Equation Modeling Using Stata, Revised Edition","author":"Acock AC","year":"2013"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444815621539","volume-title":"Understanding Attitudes and Predicting Social Behavior","author":"Ajzen I","year":"1980"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444815621539","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4135\/9781446215616"},{"key":"bibr4-1461444815621539","volume-title":"Attitudes and Language","author":"Baker C","year":"1992"},{"key":"bibr5-1461444815621539","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/1369118X.2014.889189"},{"key":"bibr6-1461444815621539","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ijhcs.2010.11.004"},{"issue":"4","key":"bibr7-1461444815621539","first-page":"46","volume":"1","author":"Cho J","year":"2003","journal-title":"IT & Society"},{"key":"bibr8-1461444815621539","first-page":"355","volume-title":"Social Inequality","author":"DiMaggio P","year":"2004"},{"key":"bibr9-1461444815621539","volume-title":"Cultures of the Internet: The Internet in Britain","author":"Dutton WH","year":"2013"},{"issue":"2","key":"bibr10-1461444815621539","first-page":"15","volume":"12","author":"Egea JMO","year":"2006","journal-title":"Information Research"},{"key":"bibr11-1461444815621539","author":"Eynon R","year":"2012","journal-title":"Report for the Nominet Trust, Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford"},{"key":"bibr12-1461444815621539","volume-title":"Belief, Attitude, Intention, and Behavior: An Introduction to Theory and Research","author":"Fishbein M","year":"1975"},{"key":"bibr13-1461444815621539","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/1369118X.2015.1050438"},{"key":"bibr14-1461444815621539","unstructured":"Go ON UK (n.d.)
