Participants reported on their general reasons for using the Facebook Like button, as well as their most recent actual uses. Results discussed the following: the general predictors of Liking frequency, the specific meanings that participants sought to express by clicking Like (i.e. relational-based and content-based), the larger interpersonal functions that participants hoped to accomplish (i.e. relational facilitation, self-presentation, and metacommunication), the associations between intended meaning and interpersonal functionality, and finally, the additional response buttons that participants wish Facebook offered (e.g. Dislike, Sympathy, Congratulations, Agree, Disagree, Interesting, Funny, Love, and Got It). <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444817697917","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,3,20]],"date-time":"2017-03-20T11:54:57Z","timestamp":1490010897000},"page":"1451-1469","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":93,"title":["A functional approach to the Facebook Like button: An exploration of meaning, interpersonal functionality, and potential alternative response buttons"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"20","author":[{"given":"Erin M","family":"Sumner","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Trinity University, USA"}]},{"given":"Luisa","family":"Ruge-Jones","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA"}]},{"given":"Davis","family":"Alcorn","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Trinity University, USA"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,3,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444817697917","first-page":"145","volume-title":"Group Processes: Transactions of the Second Conference","author":"Bateson G","year":"1956"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444817697917","first-page":"3","volume-title":"Computer-Mediated Communication in Personal Relationships","author":"Bryant EM","year":"2011"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444817697917","volume-title":"Nonverbal Communication: The Unspoken Dialogue","author":"Burgoon JK","year":"1989"},{"key":"bibr4-1461444817697917","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/15456870.2015.972282"},{"key":"bibr5-1461444817697917","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1089\/cyber.2011.0608"},{"key":"bibr6-1461444817697917","unstructured":"Duggan M, Ellison NB, Lampe C, et al.
