We build on the growing body of research that identifies feelings of futility regarding companies\u2019 respect for consumer privacy by suggesting a link between these feelings and the activities of the companies they benefit. We conceptualize digital resignation as a rational response to consumer surveillance. We further argue that routine corporate practices encourage this sense of helplessness. Illuminating the dynamics of this sociopolitical phenomenon creates a template for addressing important questions about the forces that shape uneven power relationships between companies and publics in the digital age.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444819833331","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,3,8]],"date-time":"2019-03-08T09:41:21Z","timestamp":1552038081000},"page":"1824-1839","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":298,"title":["The corporate cultivation of digital resignation"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0204-3031","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Nora A","family":"Draper","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of New Hampshire, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Joseph","family":"Turow","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pennsylvania, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,3,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444819833331","volume-title":"Critical Models: Interventions and Catchwords","author":"Adorno TW","year":"2005"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444819833331","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444816676645"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444819833331","unstructured":"Anthony SF (2001) The case for standardization of privacy policy formats.
