This study employs survey data collected in France, the United Kingdom and the United States (1500 respondents in each country) from April to May 2017. Overall, we do not find evidence that online\/social media explain support for right-wing populist candidates and parties. Instead, in the United States, use of online media decreases support for right-wing populism. Looking specifically at echo chamber measures, we find offline discussion with those who are similar in race, ethnicity and class positively correlates with support for populist candidates and parties in the United Kingdom and France. The findings challenge claims about the role of social media and the rise of populism.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444819893983","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,3]],"date-time":"2020-04-03T02:08:41Z","timestamp":1585879721000},"page":"683-699","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":93,"title":["Right-wing populism, social media and echo chambers in Western democracies"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"22","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8951-1098","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Shelley","family":"Boulianne","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"MacEwan University, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Karolina","family":"Koc-Michalska","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Audencia Business School, France"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4458-5413","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Bruce","family":"Bimber","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,2]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4324\/9781315623016"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1126\/science.aaa1160"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0956797615594620"},{"key":"bibr4-1461444819893983","volume-title":"The New Face of Digital Populism","author":"Bartlett J","year":"2011"},{"key":"bibr5-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0894439314526559"},{"key":"bibr6-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0093650218808186"},{"key":"bibr7-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/pops.12337"},{"key":"bibr8-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/1369118X.2018.1428656"},{"key":"bibr9-1461444819893983","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Dutton W, Reisdorf B, Dubois E, et al.
