Recent work has described moderation primarily as a functional process of actions that moderators take, such as making rules, removing content, and banning users. However, the nuanced ways in which volunteer moderators envision their roles within their communities remain understudied. Informed by insights gained from 79 interviews with volunteer moderators from three platforms, we present a conceptual map of the territory of social roles in volunteer moderation, which identifies five categories with 22 metaphorical variants that reveal moderators\u2019 implicit values and the heuristics that help them make decisions. These metaphors more clearly enunciate the roles volunteer moderators play in the broader social media content moderation apparatus and can drive purposeful engagement with volunteer moderators to better support the ways they guide and shape their communities. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1461444820964968","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,20]],"date-time":"2020-10-20T09:55:21Z","timestamp":1603187721000},"page":"621-640","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":53,"title":["Metaphors in moderation"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"24","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7606-4711","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joseph","family":"Seering","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Geoff","family":"Kaufman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Carnegie Mellon University, USA"}]},{"given":"Stevie","family":"Chancellor","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, USA"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-1461444820964968","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/13620-004"},{"key":"bibr2-1461444820964968","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4159\/harvard.9780674735613"},{"key":"bibr3-1461444820964968","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/10926488.1992.9678714"},{"key":"bibr4-1461444820964968","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Dosono B, Semaan B (2019) Moderation practices as emotional labor in sustaining online communities: the case of AAPI identity work on Reddit.
