The findings indicate that teens encounter political information and news from members of their social networks via digital media more than legacy media outlets, because it enables them to assert agency over social and political issues to which they feel connected. Furthermore, teens identify a tension between viewing adults, specifically teachers and politicians, as authoritative yet untrustworthy information sources, which can lead to their use of digital media to verify or challenge what adults are telling them. Finally, teens must navigate the sociotechnical challenges of digital media, including exposure to unwanted information and the potential social backlash of posting content that could be considered by others to represent slacktivism.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/14614448211009460","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,15]],"date-time":"2021-04-15T15:44:51Z","timestamp":1618501491000},"page":"72-94","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":36,"title":["Engagement at the margins: Investigating how marginalized teens use digital media for political participation"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"25","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3812-1804","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Amana","family":"Kaskazi","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Vanessa","family":"Kitzie","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of South Carolina, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-14614448211009460","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/01616846.2015.1106892"},{"key":"bibr2-14614448211009460","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/17482798.2015.1121886"},{"key":"bibr3-14614448211009460","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/(SICI)1097-4571(1999)50:12<1043::AID-ASI1>3.0.CO;2-X"},{"issue":"1","key":"bibr4-14614448211009460","first-page":"1","volume":"3","author":"Bates MJ","year":"2002","journal-title":"The New Review of Information Behaviour Research"},{"key":"bibr5-14614448211009460","unstructured":"Benkler Y (2006) The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom.
