An initial survey and network mapping of players and guilds helped form a baseline. Next, the resulting interview transcripts were reviewed to explore player behaviors, attitudes, and opinions; the meanings they make; the social capital they derive; and the networks they form and to develop a typology of players and guilds. In keeping with current Internet research findings, players were found to use the game to extend real-life relationships, meet new people, form relationships of varying strength, and also use others merely as a backdrop. The key moderator of these outcomes appears to be the game's mechanic, which encourages some kinds of interactions while discouraging others. The findings are discussed with respect to the growing role of code in shaping social interactions. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1555412006292616","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,9,12]],"date-time":"2006-09-12T23:19:43Z","timestamp":1158103183000},"page":"338-361","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":481,"title":["From Tree House to Barracks"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"1","author":[{"given":"Dmitri","family":"Williams","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign"}]},{"given":"Nicolas","family":"Ducheneaut","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Palo Alto Research Center"}]},{"given":"Li","family":"Xiong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign"}]},{"given":"Yuanyuan","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign"}]},{"given":"Nick","family":"Yee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stanford University\/Palo Alto Research Center"}]},{"given":"Eric","family":"Nickell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Palo Alto Research Center"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2006,10,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"The functions of the executive","author":"Barnard, C.","year":"1938"},{"issue":"1","key":"atypb2","volume":"1","author":"Bartle, R.","year":"1996","journal-title":"Journal of MUD Research"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"World of Warcraft surpasses five million customers worldwide","author":"Blizzard","year":"2005"},{"key":"atypb4","volume-title":"Crusoe's footprints: Cultural studies in Britain and America","author":"Brantlinger, P.","year":"1990"},{"key":"atypb5","volume-title":"Strategy and structure: Chapters in the history of the American industrial enterprise","author":"Chandler, A.
